Ion Fukazawa draws inspiration from archaeological sites, the process of decay, and how artificial structures eventually become soil and return to earth. The excavation at the archaeological site of Akrotiri encapsulate what the artist aspires to convey. The firing process in the kiln transforms the clay into its durable ceramic form, similarly to the volcanic eruption that preserved Akrotiri under layers of ash. Additionally, the excavation of Akrotiri bears resemblance to the way in which the artist creates his work, whereby an amorphous mass of clay gradually acquires basic structures and a clear form. Ion used Japanese volcanic ash in his work, as a symbolic gesture uniting the two countries, both of which have a rich cultural history and live under the constant threat of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
