Vavatsis’ Incision is a one-meter column made of five square blocks, each of which represents a significant era of human history on our planet: Stone Age, Copper Age, Iron Age, Plastic Age, and our current Digital Age.
The work concerns the traces we leave behind as we pass into the universe’s time. What we invent is our mark and the manifestation of our existence. Encapsulated in a block of clay, the defining elements of the aforementioned eras – rocks, copper, iron, plastic, and microchips, respectively – are turning back into their basic structural forms, under the power of heat.
