Establishment of awards
A total of three prizes will be awarded to participating artists.
1st prize: €3,000 and a solo show in a gallery (TBA)
2nd prize: €2,000 and a solo show in a gallery (TBA)
3rd prize: €1,000 and participation in a group show in a gallery in Santorini (TBA)
Educational material
In cooperation with archaeologists, the Biennale of Contemporary Keramics 2024 gathered detailed scientific, research, and educational material on the archaeological site of Akrotiri. This educational material will be shared with the artists and will be accessible and free to use in educational programs at the island schools.

Guidelines
– Artists applying to the Biennale need to create a proposal inspired by the Akrotiri Archaeological site of Santorini.
– All work proposed has to be current and influenced by the theme of the Biennale.
– Artists can include in their proposal their artwork idea with sketches & drawings or images of the finalised work, if it is already created.
– The primary material has to be clay (additional materials: all mediums).
Dangerous, prohibited, or alive materials are excluded. The artwork should be appropriate and durable for outdoor display.
–The size guideline for the artwork is a floor space of 2m or less and a height of 2m or less.
– The submission must include a 500 up to a 2000 words statement based on the theme of the Biennale.
– Deadline for submissions (midnight GMT): December 15th, 2023
Production and practical information
The artists should cover all production, work transportation, and traveling expenses.
Big Blue Dot will provide artists with letters of recommendation for funding and sponsorship opportunities.
Big Blue Dot will cover two days of accommodation during the exhibition’s opening for all artists.
The Big Blue Dot team understands the importance of supporting artists beyond just the exhibition and aims to provide ongoing assistance and guidance to help artists thrive in their creative endeavors.
Artists will benefit from their participation through exposure, opportunities for distinctions through the awards, and the possibility of individual or group exhibitions in Greece.

The proposed artwork must be inspired by the Akrotiri Archaeological site and should incorporate clay as the primary material. Additional materials in all mediums are allowed, except for dangerous, prohibited, or alive materials. The artwork should be appropriate and durable for outdoor display.

Yes, there are awards for the Biennale participants. The awards include:

10. Will the Biennale provide any support to the participating artists?
The Big Blue Dot team will provide an inspirational document to help artists with their creative process. Furthermore, participating artists will have the opportunity to engage with a professional archaeologist who is a member of the excavation team at the Akrotiri Prehistoric City. This talk will allow artists to connect, learn, and ask questions about the archaeological site. The Biennale team is committed to providing ongoing assistance and guidance to help artists thrive in their creative endeavours.

11. What expenses will artists be responsible for?
Artists participating will be responsible for covering all production costs, as well as transportation related to their artwork. This includes the cost of materials, fabrication, packaging, shipping, and any necessary insurance for transportation arrangements. Artists should also plan for their own accommodation and travel expenses, excluding the two days of accommodation provided by the BBD during the exhibition’s opening.
12. Can I submit multiple works for the Biennale?
No, each participant can present only one work at the Biennale.
